Selecting Melissa's Design : Drawing Inspiration from George III's 1780 Octagon Cooler with the Ultimate Patriot in mind!

In the world of design, inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. One such gem is George III’s 1780 octagon cooler, an eye-catching piece that blended functionality with elegance. This cooler was not just a practical item for keeping drinks cold; it represented the innovative spirit of its time.

The Elegant Design of the Octagon Cooler

The unique octagonal shape of George III’s cooler provides a refreshing change from the usual circular and rectangular coolers. Each of its eight sides introduces visual intrigue and can become a key talking point at any gathering. This design allows for seamless placement in various settings, making it a versatile accessory for outdoor events.

Exploring geometric shapes in design can yield exciting results. By adopting the octagonal structure, new coolers can stand out, boosting both form and function. Envision coolers that not only keep drinks cold but also draw attention, becoming striking focal points at your next picnic. For example, an octagon cooler adorned with seasonal colors could serve as both a drink holder and a festive decoration, enhancing the ambiance of outdoor festivities.

Modernizing a work of art: Imagine the Possibilities!

While these are amazing pieces, they are not practical for daily use.

Over the next several days, I will dig in to work on a modern patriotic design and this blog is designed to make the process collaborative with all of you! So if you have ideas and suggestions, PLEASE CHIME IN!

The Importance of designing for indoor and outdoor use:

I think it's import to design this for both indoor and outdoor use because if I don't, this piece of art is likely to live it's life in the garage or outside in the elements! It needs to be a showcase whether on the patio during a party or inside as a center piece or end table.

So the 2025 Annual Customer Drawing Fun Begins:

I am excited to be on this journey and encourage all to be part of it with me! Ask any question, offer any suggestion and challenge my ideas at any time! My goal is to make high end, not seen anywhere patriotic items that people use and cherish.

Over the next several months, this blog post could be interesting!

Sincerely,

Mark Petrilla

What a fantastic concept! The idea of modernizing George III’s octagon cooler with a patriotic twist is truly inspiring. I love the focus on making it versatile for both indoor and outdoor use—it’s key to creating something that’s both functional and a showpiece. Subtle patriotic design elements, like stars or stripes, could add a meaningful touch. Can’t wait to see how this evolves!

Thanks Steve! As usual, a lot of testing and high labor usually ends up being my formula to deliver something quality. There's just no short cut that I have found. This project will take a while.

Hi Clint, thanks for the insight. Wait until you see my next project. It's going to be a rectangle cooler designed for a bar to hold a bag of ice for whiskeys. But this will be created at the ultimate premium level. Stainless steel or copper lining with next level outside.

Great idea! Too cool. Can’t wait to see the completion. If anything close to the craftsmanship your humidors, it will be amazing.

I love this idea and can’t wait to follow the process and see the end result! Such a great thought to suggest using as an end table indoors when not being used as a cooler. What type of wood are you planning to use? Burl wood furniture has been popular lately if that is an option!

Thanks for the comment and suggestion! I am still working through the design. It won’t look anything like the 1780 pictures. I like your indoor use suggestion.
